Stripe fits Lovable builders who sell services as well as digital goods, who want processor-level control over billing logic, or who run domestic-heavy card volume where pay-as-you-go economics often beat flat Merchant of Record pricing. A practical rule: if early revenue concentrates in markets Stripe covers well and you are comfortable owning tax posture, built-in Stripe is the rational default. If international digital sales dominate and you want MoR semantics, do not force Stripe for ideology—use Paddle or revisit the MoR vs PSP frame. Graduation is about architecture, not brand preference: when renewals, regions, and routing rules outgrow a single built-in connector, payment infrastructure differs from a processor toggle.
Step-by-Step: Built-in Stripe, Legacy Escape Hatch, Test, Go-Live
Prerequisites that block setup if you skip them
Built-in Stripe through Lovable Payments has hard gates. You need a Pro plan or higher—the free tier cannot enable built-in payments. You need Lovable Cloud; if Lovable prompts you to activate Cloud during setup, accept it. Built-in payments are not available on projects tied to external Supabase. Authentication is strongly recommended so each purchase maps to a user ID; without auth, subscription tiers and role-based access become fragile. Only project admins/owners or workspace admins/owners can set up or disconnect payments.
Before go-live, prepare privacy policy, terms of service, and refund policy on your deployed site. Lovable’s readiness check scans for these. A custom domain beats a bare *.lovable.app URL when Stripe or reviewers evaluate your business—several third-party guides treat branded domains as a practical approval accelerator.
Enable payments and claim the sandbox
Open the project and prompt with a specific catalog intent. Vague “add Stripe” prompts often work, but specificity reduces rework. Examples that work well: ask for a pricing page with a $29/month subscription, or ask to sell a digital course for $197 with testable checkout before go-live. Lovable analyzes what you sell and either presents Stripe and Paddle or recommends one. For services, domestic sales, or AI-adjacent products where Paddle’s acceptable-use scrutiny can slow approval, Stripe is often the better fit.
An Enable payments dialog summarizes Stripe features and pricing. Continue through the short form: email (cannot be changed after Stripe setup), name, and country. Lovable provisions a Stripe sandbox it calls your test environment. If you already have Stripe, you can link this sandbox during the claim step later—you do not need a brand-new Stripe login unless you want one.
Describe the catalog in chat so Lovable creates Stripe products/prices and wires checkout UI. Ask for tiers (Starter / Pro / Enterprise), trials, or discount codes in plain language. Manage products through Lovable rather than editing prices only in the Stripe Dashboard. Run the full lifecycle before claiming live status: purchase and entitlement grant, upgrade/downgrade, cancellation with access until period end, failed renewal (past_due) handling, trial conversion, and discount codes. Ask Lovable how to simulate a subscription renewal in test mode so you are not waiting a full billing cycle. Going live: claim, readiness, publish sync
Until go-live completes, live checkout on your published app will not charge real cards, even if preview test mode works.

Stripe’s onboarding checklist includes email verification, business details, and installing the Lovable app on your live Stripe account. Stripe prompts you to copy products, prices, and the Lovable app from test to live—that step connects live API keys and webhooks (Lovable docs).
Lovable then reviews your published site for privacy policy, terms, refund policy, and substantive content. Fix failures in chat, republish if needed, and rerun the check. Publishing syncs products and prices from test to live automatically. Discount codes do not sync—create live discounts by prompting Lovable explicitly for the live environment. Payout configuration stays in the Stripe Dashboard.
Common Pitfalls
Teams lose days on predictable mistakes. Duplicating webhooks—Lovable registers endpoints for built-in payments; manually adding the same URL in Stripe creates double fulfillment. Revoking access on cancel instead of honoring the paid period violates user expectations and Lovable’s own best-practice guidance. Switching from Paddle to Stripe inside Lovable without planning means products, prices, and subscriptions do not migrate; subscribers stay on the old provider until they churn and resubscribe.
On legacy paths, treating HTTP 200 from a checkout redirect as “paid” without webhook verification leaves orders stuck in pending. On built-in paths, opening the customer portal inside preview looks broken when the real issue is iframe restrictions—test in a normal browser tab on the deployed URL. Going live on a default *.lovable.app domain when reviewers expect a branded domain can delay Stripe or compliance checks. Editing products only in the Stripe Dashboard while Lovable remains the source of truth in test causes environment drift after the next publish sync. Pasting secret keys into chat instead of the Add API Key form is both a security and a support problem—Restricted keys (rk_...) exist for a reason when you connect an existing account.
